Teachers faulted for outsourcing secretaries

In a Bergen Record article posted online Monday night, Englewood teachers reject deal on outsourcing Rebecca Baker blames teachers for refusing pay freezes and other concessions “knowing that they may have cost nearly 100 secretaries and classroom assistants their jobs.”

It is not until the article’s fifth paragraph before the writer quotes a teacher calling the choice “unreasonable” and near the end of the article before the union local leader challenges board fiscal mismanagement. Here the narrative implicitly acknowledges that the board sets fiscal policy for the district, although the article clearly targets the teachers’ rejection of $1.5 million in concessions from a roughly $60 million budget.

The article does not provide any other analysis of budgetary impacts, such as the funding levels or the $3 million set aside for charters schools in this year’s budget.
